A new podcast platform will chronicle the stories of community champions, giving them due recognition for the work they do behind the scenes.

Homemade Heroes is the product of Jarryd Townson and Jody Euler who have partnered to deliver the innovative storytelling platform to Mackay.

“It is an opportunity to shine the light on ordinary people doing extraordinary things in our community,” Ms Euler said.

“Often these people are just doing it for the good of others, they’re not looking to be acknowledged or rewarded.

“It’s to give back and about making sure the storytelling can continue because there are so many skills being lost because of the digital era.”

Homemade Heroes’ stage 1 was officially launched at Launchpad Studios, part of Split Spaces at CQUni Mackay City, on Thursday.

The podcast is the foundation step of what is hoped to become a multimedia storytelling platform as it developed.

“Stage 1 is a regular podcast but we have a view of moving in to digital TV on the couch and an array of other things,” Ms Euler said.

Mr Townson was inspired by his grandmother who cut out death and memorial notices from the Daily Mercury for about 40 years.

Her diligence and commitment created the most comprehensive documentation of people’s history on their ancestors, and the collection was eventually donated and preserved.

“It’s those sorts of things that got Jarryd thinking about what stories are out there; the local community champions,” Ms Euler said.

Homemade Heroes will do live interviews with people the public nominates, a deliberate strategy Ms Euler said was designed to ensure the project remained about the community.
