Midge Point anglers have opened up about the best fishing spots around town, especially if you’re on the hunt for some blue speckled grouper.

Whiting off the beach and blue speckled grouper around the islands are just some of what Midge Point anglers enjoy chasing the most.

“I’d have to say the Repulse Islands,” Mr Lossberg said.

“You know why they call it that? Captain Cook tried to get in there and was repulsed out and then came here.

“They called it Midgeton because the boat they rowed in on was called the Midge.”

Noel McLeod

Mr McLeod agreed on the islands being a good fishing spot but disputed Mr Lossberg’s theory on Midgeton.

“That’s a load of crap, it’s got to be called Midge Town because of the midges,” he said with a laugh.

Mrs Grosskrewtz was much more interested in gardening than fishing, having recently turned the Midge Point gardening group into a club.

“I used to be a skippers wife but I don’t do much fishing anymore,” she said.

Young Murphy Holland is the youngest member of the Midge Point Recreational and Fishing Club.

Mrs Holland said her favourite spot to fish near Midge Point was at Repulse Bay where she could find some blue speckled groupers.

“Sealand Cafe, can always rely on a good fish from there.”

“I like to fish off the beach, I’ve retired from the boats.

“Whiting off Midge Point Beach is what I like now, I’ve actually won a competition for the biggest and most whiting.”

“It would have to be off a boat out at Jimmy’s Rock, but with a bigger boat it’s nice to get out to some of the islands like Lindeman,” Mrs King said.

“Blue grouper would be my favourite to fish.”
