“We watched the Under 16s girls final on the weekend before the Cutters game and we absolutely loved it,” Ms Edwards said.

She said she had also been at the G & S Engineering Wine and Food day on Saturday and while it sported a different crowd, she believed it showed Mackay’s appetite for big events.

“It's just good to get out, and an NRL game would be a really good opportunity for Mackay,” she said.

“Mackay wants these kind of things, the people want it.”

The pair said they did not have a preference on who played, they would just love to see a game happen.

“It would be so good to get it up here,” Ms Mooney said.

Ms Mooney said she was even hopeful a match could put Mackay on the country’s sporting map.

“I used to play rugby and we would travel,” she said.

“It would be so good to get games here in Mackay.”

The pair said they would love to see a Broncos or Cowboys game.

Ben Dau and Rachel Pabai

Ben Dau and Rachel Pabai said they were both keen to see either the Cowboys or Broncos play at BB Print Stadium.

“Obviously we would go to a game, we’d love to be able to go and support,” Mrs Pabai said.

“It would be so great for Mackay, we would love it.”

“It would be a good thing for the town,” Mr Reeve said.

“Especially with Covid-19 slowing everything down, it would be good for tourism here.”

Mr Reeve said he was even hopeful the match could open the door to other major sport games in the region.

“It would be good if the AFL could get up here too,” he said.

Nicole Butler

Nicole Butler said while she didn’t follow the NRL, she was certain there would be people eager to see a match come to Mackay.
