The 74-year-old Mackay Choral Society is performing for the first time since 2019 when it was forced to stop operations because of COVID.

It’s show Icons of Stage and Screen will be taking place at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music where the choral society will showcase 50 of its members singing some of Australia’s favourites.

Musical director Nicole Thomson said the production would focus on renditions of songs from known acts such as Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Peter Allen among a cohort of others.

“We want to do pieces that people recognise but we will also have a few gems that they won’t so the audience can really listen in to the music,” Mrs Thomson said.

For those unfamiliar with the style, Mrs Thomson said choral music at its core was simply “groups of people singing together”.

“Choral can even be sports fans chanting together in the stadium,” she said.

The upcoming show is aimed to be on the “lighter side” of classical choral music so the performers can cater to all tastes.

“We want people to be able to laugh, cry and of course sing along,” Mrs Thomson said.

While there are more than 100 members of the group, the performance will feature just fewer than half to adhere to COVID restrictions.

Mrs Thomson said the COVID restrictions in place for singing groups were appropriate given the nature of the airborne virus.

“Singers are athletes, we use our breathe, voice and bodies,” she said.

Mrs Thomson said opening up again was a challenge as national agreement on choral startup dates had been confusing.

“Artists and entertainers were really heavily impacted by COVID.

“While big artists could get by on having an online presence, a lot of smaller groups and individuals couldn’t support themselves.”

The performance will have showings at 7.30pm on Friday, April 17, and 2pm on Sunday, April 18.

“We want to remind everyone that we are so fortunate to be in a place where we can go out to concerts and support our artists,” Mrs Thomson said.
