A Mackay university student created a transformative dance piece posing the question – what is art?
Naomi Capon is studying a Bachelor of Theatre, specialising in musical theatre, at Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
And as part of her course, Ms Capon enrolled in elective subject Performing Arts Project 2, which allowed her to pursue a performance project – Art in motion.
“I decided to devise and create a 20-30 minute dance work exploring a theme of art and investigating its meaning in our current society,” Ms Capon said.
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
The dance project, which was performed in a free event at CQCOM, required her to devise, direct, choreograph and produce the work.
“I have always been fascinated by art and all of the possibilities of interpretation from a viewer. This includes both visual and performing arts,” Ms Capon said.
“Everything that you see encourages you to think. Nothing that you think is wrong and everything that you perceive is right.”
Ms Capon said Art in Motion challenged viewers understanding of art “and its role in our ever changing social, cultural and political form”.
“Each performer brought a small piece of the puzzle to help articulate the importance of the arts,” she said.
