A mother whose son was killed in a horror Whitsundays’ bus crash has renewed her calls for stronger seat belt safety in the wake of the Hunter Valley tragedy.

Hearing about the devastating deaths of 10 people when a bus transporting wedding guests rolled while driving through a roundabout struck a familiar chord for Nikki Brown.

“It hit home really hard,” Ms Brown said.

“All the victim’s photos coming out and they’re so young. It’s just been a hard week.”

Her 19-year-old son Casey Stinson-Brown was killed after he was flung from his seat when the bus he was on left Shute Harbour Rd on February 16, 2016 and hit a raised dirt driveway becoming airborne.

When the bus landed it rolled. Casey was thrown into the opposite wall and fatally struck his head.

Ms Brown could only identify her son from his tattoos, his face had been unrecognisable.

Ten other passengers ranging in age from six months to 79 were also injured including one man suffering a traumatic hand amputation and a woman a “major degloving of the forearm”.

The bus had been travelling from Cannonvale to Proserpine when the tragedy occurred, because of the momentary inattention of 70-year-old driver Alan Dorman.

He was charged over the crash but died before the case was finalised.

Casey had not been wearing a seatbelt, which was the subject of a coronial inquest in early 2021.

Currently seatbelts are only required on long distance coach services and school buses travelling on long steep, and very steep roads.

“Nobody has a choice up here whether they want to put a seat belt on or not,” Ms Brown said.

“They should be there for people that do want to put a seat belt on.

“There’s no way I would ever put my kids on a bus now.”

She has called on the state government, which still has still not acted on recommendations stemming from the inquest and handed down 18 months ago, to do better.

Those recommendations included that seatbelts on route buses be mandated within 12 months.

But Ms Brown alleged there was “no way” the government was going to act because of the cost.

A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesman said TMR was continuing to review the coroner’s recommendation.

“TMR will continue to provide reporting updates as required via the Department of Justice and the Attorney-General,” he said.
