RON has been retired for 10 years, and he said after covering expenses such as gas, rates, and electricity, there was nothing left to save.

"It costs a lot just to live; Centrelink payments don't go very far," he said.

"Everything is getting more expensive - the cost of living keeps rising and it makes you wonder how long you can stay viable."

In terms of spending, he said there wasn't much left after the bills were paid, but indoor bowls and cards were inexpensive forms of entertainment.

"I can't say that I don't have what I need; I have food in my belly," Ron said.

"I suppose we sacrifice going away on trips."
