THE doors of one of Mackay's greatest assets have been flung open to the world.
The Resources Centre of Excellence hosted its open day, which gave participants a chance to see first-hand the industry innovation and development happening right here in Mackay.
RCOE general manager Steven Boxall said the vision for the centre was to allow business and industry to use the space to develop the "technology and the jobs of the future".
The centre also boasts a simulated underground coal mine for training and research.
Mr Boxall said RCOE was also in the process of creating a state-of-the-art virtual reality training system.
"Queensland University of Technology is developing that in Brisbane for our facility here," he said.
"That will enable people from the industry to come and use the training system."

Several exhibitors showcased their technology during the open day, including 2censor managing director Corey Vaughan.
He has developed a patented sensor developed to warn about pipe wear.
The sensor detects cracks before they reach the blowout stage, saving mining companies millions.
Mr Vaughan said the support from RCOE had been "beneficial" to businesses like his.
"The support, the programs they run here, they are really positive with promoting Mackay business," he said.
Mr Boxall said the open day was a great success.
"People from all over Australia are wanting to come and see what we're doing here," he said.
