Rural View is tapping into the brewery fever that is sweeping over Mackay with plans to transform a vacant section of the Porter’s Mitre 10 Trade Centre building.

Kraigs Enterprises, directed by Cassandra Egan of Eimeo, is behind the proposal to open a new food and drink outlet plus a brewery inside the site at 16 to 24 Carl St.

Charles Porter and Sons bought the building back in 2010 for $1.96m to expand its trade, nursery, homewares, and cafe operations from the city to the Northern Beaches.

But the mining downturn forced it to shut in 2016. The store reopened in 2020 but at a reduced capacity mostly selling paint, plumbing and timber supplies directly to tradespersons.

Kraigs Enterprises now wants to section off 145 sqm of the unused Porter’s Mitre 10 building and use the existing kitchen to launch a new food and drink outlet as well as a brewery that will run alongside it.

Documents lodged to council reveal the brewery has space to store ingredients and make beer, a cold room for the kegs and an area for sales and testing of products.

The brewery will have 7800L fermentation tanks that are capable of making up to 132,600 litres of beer per year over 17 three-week brewing periods.

The application states the application supplies a “unique” alternative to takeaway food that will service Rural View’s demand for restaurants which at present were limited.

It further states the council should consider the proposal favourably considering it approved a variation request that let Stockwell build its Emporium in Rural View “as if located in the mixed-use zone”, arguing Carl St and Arana Dr should also be allowed commercial and retail-based activity.

Documents further reveal the initial concept was to build a “boutique” distillery but there was a change in direction to favour a brewery instead.

The brewery and eatery will have both indoor and outdoor seating and make use of the existing outdoor playground that was built for the Rural View Porter’s Mitre 10 which first opened in 2011.

There are no proposed changes to the building’s exterior or facade.
