Hay Point terminal could soon be exporting more than coal as port owners consider building a green hydrogen hub amid a renewables revamp.

North Queensland Bulk Ports has committed to feasibility studies for the hub and other hydrogen export expansion opportunities at Mackay, Abbot Point, and Hay Point ports.

A statement of corporate intent for FY22-23 notes the studies are expected to cost $6 million dollars, with $1.5 million slated for the 2022-23 budget.

It also states NQBP is currently working with the Greater Whitsunday alliance in assessing biofutures development.

The 2022-23 annual report states NQBP “continues to actively plan for” future renewables trade.

“The promotion of renewable energy by our trading partners such as Japan and Korea is increasing the opportunity for NQBP to play an important role in the future hydrogen trade,” the report reads.

“NQBP has executed a funding agreement with the partners to initiate the feasibility (for) a green hydrogen hub within the vicinity of existing (Hay Point) terminal infrastructure and the development of a supply chain.”

Documents also noted NQBP was “in alignment with and supporting” key government initiatives “such as the Qld Hydro pumped hydro project inland from Mackay”.

A Memorandum of Understanding to pursue feasibility studies for green hydrogen export facilities was announced between NQBP, ITOCHU Corporation, Dalrymple Bay Infrastructure Limited and Brookfield Asset Management Inc in August 2021.

Department of Energy and Public Works documents identify Mackay and Hay Point as priority ports for hydrogen development

The Queensland government estimates Mackay/Hay Point ports could ship 780,000 tonnes per year of hydrogen using renewable energy capacity of 20.8GW
