Multimillion-dollar Mackay road contract awarded

Work on one of the region’s major road projects has kicked off with a multinational construction giant at the helm

MULTINATIONAL construction giant CBP Contractors has won the main construction contract for the $120.35 million Mackay Northern Access Upgrade project.

Work on the project will start next week, a statement from the Department of Transport and Main Roads said.

The project involves upgrading the Bruce Highway from the Ron Camm Bridge and major intersections north of Mackay to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow to Bald Hill Road.

It was initially pegged to cost $80 million with construction expected to start in 2018 and finish in 2020.

Information provided by TMR said construction would begin on February 17 and continue until mid 2022.

CPB Contractors is working on a number of multimillion-dollar contracts for the Queensland Government, including the $497 ­million Mackay Ring Road (stage one), the $5.4 billion Cross River Rail project and the Logan Motorway enhancement project.

Six expressions of interest were submitted for the main construction tender, a TMR spokesman said.

CPB, Lend Lease and Brisbane based CMC were short-listed and able to compete for tender.

Initial construction activities will start from Monday, February 17, 2020

This will include:

•Relocation works for water services in conjunction with Mackay Regional Council

•Installation of construction and road signage

•Installation of temporary barriers and line marking

•Placement of temporary fencing and erosion and sediment controls

•Weed survey and treatment including week spraying

•Establishment of temporary site compounds and offices, which includes waste, water and electrical services

•Survey work and geotechnical investigations

•Pre-condition property surveys.

During construction, you may notice some changes around your local area such as:

•Increased levels of localised noise and dust from the use of heavy machinery and equipment

•Increased construction vehicle movements on local roads within the project corridor

•Delivery of plant, materials and equipment to the project corridor

•Changed traffic conditions to include speed reductions along the Bruce Highway to 60km/hr and 40km/hr as required.
