MetRes’ Millennium Mine exports 21,000 tonnes to Japan

A Bowen Basin mine’s export business has kicked off with its first shipping to set sail from Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal on December 13.

While the country’s metallurgical coal prices hit a record high, a Bowen Basin mine has delivered its first shipment to Japanese steel makers just in time for Christmas.

After an April 2021 MetRes acquisition and a “lightning-fast” mine restart, Coppabella’s Millennium Mine has begun its coal exporting business with its first shipping to Japan.

The first coal – two shipments of 10,500 tonnes – went by rail from Millennium Mine to Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal last Monday and Tuesday.

“After MetRes first announced the Millennium acquisition in April, it is an extraordinary effort to be making our first shipment, scheduled to arrive with customers before year’s end,” MetRes chair Matt Latimore said.

The shipments will depart Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal on December 13, and are expected to arrive within 12 days – a “Christmas Day treat”.

“This coal will be a welcome addition under the Christmas tree,” said Mr Latimore.

“Japanese steel makers are striving to respond to continued strong global demand and we are here to support their efforts.

“Massive construction and infrastructure projects right around the world will see steel demand continue to grow in coming years.

“We are grateful for our strong relationships with our Japanese trading partners. We see this first shipment starting a new chapter which will continue to deepen our economic connection.”
