Mackay, you’ve been screaming out for a particular German retailer for years and it would seem your wishful thinking fell on listening ears.
Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson has confirmed ALDI’s property acquisition manager has visited the region twice in the past six months to discuss plans for a new store.
“They plan to open hopefully in Mackay, Townsville and Cairns but they can’t do that unless they have a distribution centre so that’s what they’re working on,” Cr Williamson said.
“I’m not going to say that we’re competing (for the centre) but I’d like it to be here.”
Cr Williamson mentioned ALDI’s visits after reading what Mackay ratepayers wanted to be funded from the 2021-2022 budget.
The confirmation of ALDI’s intentions follow residents’ previously deflated hopes for a Mackay store after fake job advertisements were posted on Facebook in March.
