When you spend your life following your dad around Queensland’s resources sector hubs, it is almost a guarantee you want to be part of this industry.
Having divided his youth between Rockhampton, Moranbah, Mackay and Papua New Guinea as his father moved with work, James Martin was drawn to the resources sector but knew he was not cut out for a trade.
The self-confessed numbers geek undertook an accounting degree at QUT before joining Hastings Deering as a graduate in 2021.
“My Dad works for the company so of course I knew a lot about Hastings Deering, but I didn’t know they had a graduate program,” he said.
“I have always loved big machinery, but even Dad knew my skills were not in a trade.
“I love it that the program rotates us through various parts of the business and that means coming back to Mackay for three to six months.”
Hastings Deering is on the hunt for 10 university students to join its 2023 graduate program: in areas of engineering, business, digital, finance and human resources.
The mining and construction support company is known for its annual apprenticeship intake but also says it invests in future leaders with its two-to-three-year program.
Graduates spend six months completing rotations across four different placements: opening doors to not only Hastings Deering but the broader Sime Darby network.
Hastings Deering’s recruitment manager Leesa Thompson said the company had employed graduates in a variety of roles for more than 10 years with several moving into senior leadership roles.
“Since 2011 we have employed 25 graduates with engineering the clear winner in terms of application numbers,” she said.
“We currently have 11 graduates participating in our program: their rotations dependent on the area of discipline, with dedicated support from talent specialist and rotation sponsors.
“The graduates also participate in a variety of development initiatives including networking events, professional accreditation and general professional and leadership training.
Applications close on April 3.
