A party store is up for sale after more than two decades helping people celebrate weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and more.
Haydn and Olive Tunnah opened D.I.Y. Party Supplies in 1995 after long careers as high school teachers at Mackay State High School and Mackay North State High School.
Now in their 70s after 28 years in the business they are looking to hang up their party hats.
“We’ve played a part in memory making moments for lots of families in Mackay, “ Mr Tunnah said.
“That’s what it really comes down to.
“Not only the 18th and the 21st, but the 50th birthdays, the 50th anniversaries.
“A lot of our customers are regulars, you know, because they’ve been coming to us for 20 plus years and often you know everything about them.
“And that’s why it be sad to sell the business but, you know, our years are numbered.”
The Tunnahs listed D.I.Y. for sale with Raine and Horne as well as Business Brokers Brisbane, with listings describing the gargantuan 900sqm+ shop as a “one-stop destination for all party, wedding, and event needs”.
“The business has earned a trusted reputation as a reliable source for a diverse range of products, including balloons, party supplies, theme decorations, costumes, disposable catering supplies, cake decorating essentials, wedding supplies, and more”, a listing on SeekBusiness states.
“The property, also available for sale, is zoned for Business or Principal Centre use, indicating its suitability for commercial activities and making it an excellent investment or business location.”
The business has a “very competitive” price of $250,000 + SAV ($400,000), whereas the the land itself at 140-142 Wood St is valued at $1,300,000.
Mr Tunnah said he hoped investors would buy and continue the business, but said they had already received offers on the land from “Southern developers”.
He said it was an “ideal family business” with a family able to cope with some parts of the year being busier than others, but said despite his hopes he was pragmatic about the possibility of the business shuttering.
“It would be a last resort because it comes down to the amount of money,” Mr Tunnah said.
“(But) even though you might be smiling through your tears, you are smiling because all the happy memories.”
