A witness has described seeing a cane train ‘jumping up and down’ before it derailed at a Mackay intersection on Monday morning.
The cane train derailed at the intersection of Cowleys Road and Schmidtkes Road, just before 9am.
Keith Hyatt was travelling in the area when he witnessed the event.
“I was just waiting at the lights at the stop and the cane train was passing through and we saw the train kind of jumping up and down and bit and to the left and then with the angle the train resulted in, I could tell it had derailed,” he said.
“The train and the first wagon, so it appears where they change the train tracks, that is where it has happened.”
Mr Hyatt attended to two people in the train to make sure they were OK.
“They were a bit shook up, but they were OK,” he said.
Mr Hyatt suspects the train was on its way to the Racecourse Mill.
It is understood the southern part of Cowleys Road will be blocked for hours and a crane is en route to lift the train and wagons.
