NICOLE uses an Excel spreadsheet with months listed, and every bill is planned for over the year. She calculates how much she needs to cover them all and puts that money into a separate account with direct debits coming from that to pay bills. All bills for her house, car, rates and phone are in that account.

Whatever is left over is savings.

She said she has always been a saver, and it was something her parents drilled into her at a young age.

When it came to spending, Nicole enjoys occasional weekends away and going to the movies.

She also allows herself $100 a week to cover lunches and so on.

In terms of rising costs she had felt the effects of electricity price rises.
