A rodeo clown is in hospital after a freakish incident at Saturday night’s bull riding event.
RACQ CQRescue chopper flew the protection clown Brodie Frizzell to Mackay Base Hospital after a bull headbutt and kicked him at the Bloomsbury event.
Queensland Ambulance Service received a call for help at 8.57pm on Saturday and the rescue chopper was activated at 9.31pm.
Mr Frizzell suffered injuries to the head and abdomen.
It is understood Mr Frizzell is being monitored and his injuries are not life-threatening.
Protection athletes work in teams of three to guard the cowboys from the bull.
One rescues the cowboy while another distracts the bull. The third acts as backup.
In last night’s incident, Mr Frizzell was tasked with distracting the bull.
Professional Bull Riders Australia General Manager Glen Young saw the incident and said it was just a “freakish accident.”
“He became the target I guess,” Mr Young said.
“It’s a situation of positioning.
“He was at the right place at the wrong time.”
The bull hit Mr Frizzell and threw him against the steel bucking shute.
The bull then pushed Mr Frizzell against the steel before heading out of the arena.
Mr Frizzell did not suffer puncture marks.
“He’ll be sore for a while,” Mr Young said.
Photographer Michaela Harlow, taking pictures for the Daily Mercury, said crowd expressed shock when the incident unfolded.
“It was horrible to watch,” she said.
“It wasn’t something anybody should go through.
“The bull was cranky, they certainly have personality.”
Mr Young added Mr Frizzell was at the “top of his game” and was voted one of the top four protection athletes in Australia.
