Murder accused 'moved in the same circles' as Jay Brogden

UPDATE: Police have charged a man in relation to an Airlie Beach murder in 2007. They say the two men accused of murder were 'associates' of Jay Brogden.

UPDATE: POLICE have been inundated with witnesses coming forward about the Jay Brogden cold case.

But they are now asking for more community help as they expect to make more arrests in the ongoing investigation.

Airlie Beach man Jay Brogden went missing in 2007. An inquest found he most likely met foul play.

One man has now been charged and another is expected to be charged upon extradition from NSW in May once other matters are finalised. 

"As part of this investigation, today a 33-year-old man was arrested and charged with Jay Brogden's murder," Detective Inspector Damien Hansen said.

"He's faced Brisbane Magistrates Court this afternoon.

"This 33 year old was extradited from Sydney in relation to other offences on March 19.

"This follows the arrest of a 32-year-old Coffs Harbour man last week who is in custody in NSW and will be extradited to Queensland where he will also be charged with Jay Brogden's murder."

Det Insp Hansen said there were more people involved in this offence 'whether it be for murder or accessory after the fact'.

"Although we're pleased with the information we've received so far I'm aware that there are people out there in the community who have further information and I urge them to come forward.

"I expect there will be further arrests as this investigation proceeds.

"There is an indemnity from prosecution for any person who wasn't the principle offender for this offence.

"As this matter is currently before the court I'm limited in what I can say about details about the offence."

When asked what led to the arrest, Det Insp Hansen said information had come through to them.

"We're being inundated with witnesses and people who have now come forward with information," he said.

Det Insp Hansen said he would not comment on an alleged motive, nor whether confessions had been made.

He said the two accused men were 'associates from up the Whitsundays at that time'.

"They're obviously not living there now. But certainly there were close associates," he said.

"They've moved in the same circle of friends and associates (as Jay Brogden)."

Det Insp Hansen said nobody had claimed the reward yet.

"Potentially there could be but that'll be a matter has it proceeds through court," he said.

Det Insp Hansen said detectives had briefed the family this morning about the arrest.

"It's very traumatic for them. They're pleased with the results so far but they're well aware that there's a long process to go through from here with prosecution," he said.
 

EARLIER: A MAN has been charged with murder in relation to the death of Jay Brogden in Airlie Beach in 2007.

The 33-year-old man was extradited from Sydney to Brisbane on March 19 in relation to an incident in Airlie Beach in 2009.

The man was arrested for his alleged role in the murder this morning, as part of an investigation by members of the Homicide Group and Whitsunday CIB.

It follows the arrest of a 32-year-old man in Coffs Harbour on March 26. He was arrested by NSW Police on unrelated matters and remains in custody.

Detectives will apply for his extradition to Queensland at a later date.

Investigations are ongoing and the 33-year-old man charged this morning is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court this afternoon.
