The incident comes two days after the 12 month anniversary of a separate youth tragedy involving a stolen car in North Queensland when four teenagers died in Townsville after the car slammed into a traffic pole.

Superintendent Glenn Morris said it was important to remember a 13-year-old was dead when considering any criticism that could arise from the alleged stolen vehicle.

“It’s not about victim blaming,” Superintendent Morris said.

“There are dangerous consequences to actions, particularly with motor vehicles (which) are perhaps one of the most dangerous objects and items that we have within our community.

“Sadly tragic consequences can occur.”
