The man missing for more than a month after he disappeared while spearfishing in waters off Victoria has been revealed as Mackay region father Andrew Mallett.
Tributes are pouring in for the former Bowen Basin mine worker as those who knew him struggle to come to terms with the loss.
“Rip Drew … you will always be remember mate for your cheeky smile … we are all going to miss you,” one wrote.
“Drew was an absolute gentleman of the industry. Such a loss,” wrote another.
“Deepest condolences to his family and to all that knew him. A true gentleman and legend of the industry. It was a privilege to have met you brother,” said another.
“Rest easy Drew you were an absolute gentlemen.”
Mr Mallett went missing on November 28, 2024 while he was spearfishing in waters along Artillery Rocks in Separation Creek, along the Great Ocean Rd, which is a popular fishing destination.
It is understood he got into trouble in the surf about 2pm and was last seen near Artillery Rocks, about halfway between Lorne and Wye River.
Witnesses attempted to save the man, but sadly lost sight of him, prompting a massive search and rescue mission involving extensive air, ocean and coastal searches.
But by December 8, 2024 police had scaled back the search for Mr Mallett with “grave concerns” for his welfare and it is understood it had become a recovery mission.
Queensland Mines Rescue Service posted a tribute for Mr Mallett stating “it is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the presumed loss of Andrew ‘Drew’ Mallett, a valued member of the Queensland Mines Rescue Service family”.
“Drew tragically went missing while spearfishing off the coast of Lorne, Victoria,” QMRS wrote.
“Witnesses reported that he encountered difficulties in the water and did not resurface.
“Despite extensive air, sea, and coastal searches, Drew has not yet been recovered.”
Mr Mallett had been a QMRS member since May 2010 and had worked in roles across Carborough Downs, Grosvenor and Aquila mines.
“His unwavering commitment to safety and the mining community will always be remembered,” QMRS wrote.
A memorial service is planned for February.
