SOME babies just can't wait to come into the world.

Paramedics were called to Sugarshed Rd this afternoon, where a woman in her 30s was in labour in a car at the side of the road.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the paramedics were called to help about 4.20pm but the baby was already born when they arrived.

A midwife, who was with the mother in the car, and an ambulance emergency dispatcher helped deliver the baby, whose gender isn't yet known.

The birth apparently went smoothly, with the baby "crying and breathing” while paramedics were in attendance.

The mother and her baby were taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

The spokeswoman said the dispatcher who took the emergency call was new to the job and delighted to help.
