Declan Tingay says his bigger goal of a World Athletics Championship medal is within reach after winning the 10,000m race walk at nationals.
The 24-year-old race walker from Western Australia won the title in a time of 38 minutes 46.74 seconds, just outside his own national record set in February of this year.
Tingay‘s recent performances have been nothing short of outstanding.
He just returned from Japan last week after setting an Olympic qualifying standard for the 20k road race in the walk with a time of 1:18.
Tingay was a gold medallist in the 10,000m track event at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year, and he has continued his excellent form into the new year.
Tingay attributed his recent success to the training and support he has received from Athletics Australia training camps and the Melbourne squad.
“There’s been a bunch of really good results, one after the other this year.” Tingay said.
“I’ve been really well set up by Athletics Australia training camps and a great base of training that I’ve done alongside our Melbourne squad.”
Tingay‘s ultimate goal is to be on the podium at major championships like Budapest, Paris, and beyond. Winning the gold medal in the 10,000m race walk at the Australian Track and Field nationals is just the beginning.
“It’s a good feeling to win.” said Tingay.
“It’s one of those goals that we’ve been working towards, and hopefully it helps us towards the bigger goal, which is to be on the podium at major championships.”

Tingay‘s recent performances have undoubtedly put him in contention for selection to the World Athletics Championships in Budapest come August.
His exceptional form will make it difficult for the selectors to overlook him for the event.
With the World Athletics Championships just a few months away, Tingay will be looking to build on his recent success and push toward Budapest and beyond.
