$6.6 million boost for Mackay community mental health facility gets green light

A $6.6 million makeover for Mackay’s community mental health facility is going ahead, Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert says.

The assistant health minister said the refurbishment would provide private clinical environments for patients and separate clinical and public access areas from staff-only areas.

The cash splash was promised as an election commitment from the Labor government last year.

Mrs Gilbert said she wanted to ensure anyone who needed treatment and support for mental health was able to receive it locally.

“Supporting crucial upgrades to support mental health care in the area is something I have been a strong advocate for, because I know that it will mean so much to our community,” she said.

“We know that ongoing support from mental health clinicians in a community setting is vital, and these upgrades will deliver better care to more people in our area.”

The state government also committed to an expansion of medical imaging and renal at the Bowen Hospital, the Sarina Hospital redevelopment, planning for a major expansion for Mackay Base Hospital and redevelopments of Moranbah and Bowen hospitals.
