THE Toowong studios abandoned by the ABC after a spate of cancer cases will make way for luxury riverfront apartments.

The new owner says tests had been "conclusive" the site was safe for future residents.

Seven years after concerns of a breast cancer cluster forced the national broadcaster to vacate, the site fronting the Brisbane River has been sold for $20 million to Gold Coast-based developer Sunland.

Up to 18 women who worked on the 1.5ha site between 1994 and 2006 developed breast cancer.

It moved into a new $100 million purpose-built building at South Bank early last year.

Sunland, the developer of the Gold Coast's Q1 supertower and Palazzo Versace Hotel, was one of a number of short-listed major development groups that had been circling the property on Coronation Drive.

Managing director Sahba Abedian said the listed group was planning a "mid-rise" luxury apartment tower for the riverfront property.

Mr Abedian said he had no fears of selling apartments in the future project despite the lingering stigma of the cancer cluster concerns.

"Tests have been conclusive ... there is nothing to show there is any concern," he said.

Mr Abedian said Sunland was continuing to evaluate its proposals for a residential development on the site and was likely to lodge an application with council in the next six months.

He said under the existing town planning regulations covering the Toowong holding it could build up to 15 storeys.
