While most teens her age are partying at Schoolies on the Gold Coast, 18-year-old Lucy Hamilton is celebrating a record-breaking performance on the cricket pitch.
The Brisbane Heat bowler made history by becoming the youngest player in WBBL history to take a five-wicket haul during her side’s six-wicket win over the Melbourne Stars on Sunday.
Hamilton’s figures of 5-8 are among the best in the competition’s 10-year history, but the Bundaberg teenager didn’t even grasp the weight of what she had accomplished initially.
“I didn’t really think about the records at first — I didn’t even know them,” she said.
“But knowing now what I’ve done, and how everyone has reacted … it’s really sunk in how special it is and I’m just like, really proud of myself.”
Hamilton’s stellar performance came just weeks after finishing her Year 12 exams, a balance she has managed for years.
“I’ve been doing it since Year 10, doing online schooling from Bundaberg and then coming down here and training with the girls,” she said.
“But it’s been great now to sort of finish that off and just be able to focus on my cricket and be able to play some good cricket.”
Her teammates celebrated her historic day with a low-key dinner at the pub, capped off with Yochi for dessert.
“We just went to the pub for dinner. It was really nice,” Hamilton joked.
Her parents, who made the trip to Sydney to watch her play, were also thrilled.
“It was their 26th wedding anniversary, so they came down to Sydney and watched both games,” Hamilton said.
“I could hear them yelling from the hill, which is really nice, and I saw them after the game, so it was great.”
As Christmas approaches, Hamilton is looking forward to her family’s traditional Boxing Day backyard cricket match.
“We roll out a pitch with the car, and everyone gets around,” she said.
“I’ve got a very competitive family so it’s really fun.”
For now, Hamilton’s focus is on leading the Heat through the WBBL finals, proving that skipping Schoolies for cricket was the best decision she could have made.
