Firefighters who battled a house fire at Loganholme last Saturday were shocked to find black kelpie-cross Henrietta alive in the wreckage of the gutted home.

The crew rescued the frightened dog, which was placed in the intensive care unit of the Animal Emergency Service. Vets were initially concerned she might not pull through.

Veterinarian Alex Hynes said Henrietta had been fighting to breathe due to extreme smoke inhalation.

“When she first came in she was in shock and found it very hard to breathe,” Dr Hynes told The Courier-Mail.

“Her lungs were inflamed and she was dependent on oxygen and very distressed. We had to sedate her for pain relief.”

Henrietta suffered painful ulcers in both eyes from the smoke and is being given eye drops every hour.

Dr Hynes said Henrietta was now on the road to recovery.

“It’s been a real roller coaster for her but she’s a real little fighter,” she said.

“She’s breathing easier now and can walk around. I think she’s just days away from going back home.”

Fortunately, mother-of-two Lee Ellison, 48, and her two sons, aged 12 and 28, were not in the house when the fire broke out.
