Lifestyle precinct Lamington Markets to launch in Lutwyche

A massive development featuring a huge indoor market hall, craft brewery and restaurants - along with more than 100 residential units - has been approved for Brisbane’s inner north.

Brisbane’s inner north is set to welcome a whopping 10,000 square metre food, retail and lifestyle precinct in Lutwyche, with Brisbane City Council giving the green light to Lamington Markets.

The impressive development at 612 Lutwyche Rd will feature one of Brisbane’s largest indoor market halls, a rooftop urban farm, craft brewery, boutique cinemas, restaurants, cafes, health centres and commercial spaces.

It will also have two towers with more than 134 two, three and four-bedroom residential apartments.

Lamington Markets is the work of Marketplace Developments and James Rennell, co-founder of soon-to-open Albion lifestyle precinct Craft’d Grounds, in collaboration with developers Murray and Frank Stafford and architectural firm Conrad Gargett.

“The vision behind Lamington Markets has always been about creating a permanent

paddock-to-plate experience, connecting us directly with over 100 different market owners,

artisans and farmers, right on our doorstep,” Mr Rennell said.

“We’ve drawn influence from global, thriving permanent market venues like Chelsea

Markets in New York and Adelaide Markets – icons of their cities with a load of ‘soul’. And

this is what we’re going to create here.

“And now as we find ourselves thrown into the global spotlight with the [Olympic] Games – Lamington Markets will be part of getting our city ready for the future.”

Lamington Markets will also be directly integrated with the northern busway over Lutwyche Station.

“It’s pretty special – fusing food, living, community, commercial and public transport into

this precinct means you won’t need a vehicle to live, visit or work here,” Mr Rennell said.

The market hall will have room for more than 100 stall holders, and also include a specialty supermarket and boutique retail. While the 400sq m craft brewery will fill the lower level of the precinct and offer a chance for drinkers to see, touch and experience beer making close up.

The rooftop farm will be a sizeable 500sq m and provide food for a premium restaurant; while a boutique cinema and specialty function space is inspired by Tasmania’s Mona building.

The sustainably designed development is about giving shoppers the opportunity to “connect back to the land” and will feature landscaping and laneways surrounding the precinct and wall-lined greenery for temperature control. This includes terraced lawns inspired by the Highline in New York, and laneways connecting to the park on Lamington Ave, after which the project is named.

Construction is set to start towards the end of the year and is expected to take about three years to complete.
