A South East Queensland mother has relived the horrifying e-scooter accident that could have cost her life in Brisbane on Monday.
Leanne Chester, 44, was riding an e-scooter to work at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital when she was hit by a car.
Ms Chester spoke to The Courier-Mail about the terrifying ordeal, which occurred at the intersection of O’Connell Terrace and Sneyd Street in Bowen Hills.
“I was approaching the intersection when I realised the driver was looking the other way and was going to hit me if he pulled out, so I slammed on the scooter’s brakes and yelled to alert the driver,” she said.
“Quite literally he just smacked me in the middle of my body and I ended up underneath the car, my last thought was ‘this is how I’m going to die’.
“I thought I really was gone, I thought about how my husband would have to tell my kids I’m dead, my next thought was that ‘oh my god I’m alive’.”
After being swept underneath the car and coming to the realisation she had survived the shocking impact, Ms Chester faced a different challenge.
“I tried reaching for my face with my right hand to check for blood, but then realised ‘there is a tyre on my arm’,” she said.
“I could see people holding their faces in disbelief, I knew then I needed to scream so they knew I was alive, so I did.”
At that moment, Ms Chester recalled a woman emerging from the crowd, kneeling down and holding the hand attached to the arm which was still stuck under the car.
“She just said “I’m here, I’m calm, you’re calm and help is on the way,” Ms Chester said.
“I just started to go you need to reverse the car, I can get out, my whole body is free, honestly reverse the car.
“I screamed because the driver was hesitant to move the car off me, “my right arm is burning from the exhaust and I need to get out.”
In an incredible act of people power onlookers, including the driver, then picked the car up and off Ms Chester’s arm.
“After several tries, I was wreathed by my backpack straps out from under that car and I could not believe I had survived,” she said.
After reassuring the driver it was an accident and that she was okay, Ms Chester was taken into the care of paramedics.
“They were in shock that my arm had been pinned under a car and I had managed to escape serious injury,” she said.
“I would love to thank and reconnect with the woman who knelt with me and reassured me that everything would be okay.
“She told me she had to leave for an appointment after I was freed and being treated and I reassured her that I was going to be okay now.”
