KittyCats out on the water from today

The replacement for Brisbane’s timber ferries will commence passenger services from today, in what the Lord Mayor has described as an “exciting milestone” for the city. See what they look like.

New Brisbane KittyCats

Brisbane’s newest ferries are on the water from right … meow.

Affectionately dubbed the KittyCats, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has promised the new catermarans are purrfect for reinstating services suspended since Brisbane’s beloved timber ferries were pulled from the water.

“The modern KittyCats are an excellent addition to our fleet while we work towards a repair timeline for the wooden ferries,” Cr Schrinner said.

“To have the KittyCats in service, with their blue and yellow colouring and eye-catching design, is an exciting milestone in Brisbane’s river transport history,” he said.

Cr Schrinner said it was the next chapter in the city’s ferry services, which stretched back to 1844.

“I told residents ferry services would return to Brisbane and that we would reinstate as many services as possible, and that is exactly what we’ve done,” he said.

Passengers were being urged to reorient themselves with new timetables, with some Cross River and CityHopper services being restored.

Public and active transport chair Ryan Murphy said the new vessels had been extensively trialled by ferry masters over past weeks and were now ready for passengers.

“The KittyCats have increased speed and capacity and the ferry masters have been cruising the Brisbane river, undertaking docking trials and completing training to ensure the best possible experience is delivered,” Cr Murphy said.
