Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon has been spotted in Brisbane, where she is filming her role as the Tiger King’s animal activist rival, Carole Baskin, in the Joe Exotic series she is also producing.

Kyle MacLachlan tries to learn Australian slang in Sydney quarantine

Actor Kate McKinnon has been spotted in Brisbane as filming on the Joe Exotic series continues in the city.

The NBC Universal production has been underway at Screen Queensland Studios since early July, but McKinnon, who will star as activist Carole Baskin and serves as executive producer on the series, had so far kept a low profile.

The Saturday Night Live star was snapped on an early morning walk on Wednesday near QUT’s Gardens Point campus at the Botanic Gardens, happily posing for a photo with a passer-by.

The Joe Exotic series is based on the hit Wondery podcast depicting the true events surrounding Baskin and her rivalry with exotic animal lover Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel, who is played by John Cameron Mitchell.

Mitchell has been spotted in costume in Brisbane and performed at The Tivoli in early July ahead of filming.

“Joe had a hard life and our version of the story is going to be about the people rather than the sensation,” Mitchell told the crowd.

McKinnon’s arrival in Brisbane comes as fellow Hollywood actor Kyle MacLachlan completes his mandatory hotel quarantine in Sydney.

The Twin Peaks star will act opposite McKinnon as Carole Baskin’s husband Howard Baskin.

He has been sharing videos of his attempts at Australian slang during his first week of quarantine.

Naomi Watts replied “Nice start mate. You’ll be spot on by day 14. No wucken furries!!” while Sam Neill commented “Got it down man. On ya.”

Meanwhile other members of the cast, including Dean Winters, Brian Van Holt and William Fichtner, recently enjoyed a box seat view of the Brisbane Lions at The Gabba.

They were hosted by the Lions in a swanky new corporate suite for the team’s recent win over the West Coast Eagles.

It’s understood Fichtner has been an AFL buff since Australian actor Eric Bana, his good friend and co-star on Black Hawk Down (2001), introduced him to the game.

He had wanted to watch a game while he was in Brisbane filming, and introduce his co-stars to the sport, and the club was happy to oblige.

“They happened to attend one of the most exciting matches, not just of the season, but in our history and so they were all very excited and having a ball,” a Lions spokeswoman said.

“They were a really fun, laid-back crew – nice people who were more than happy to chat to everyone, pose for photos, and learn about AFL.”
