Greens state Member for South Brisbane Amy MacMahon has been seriously injured in a traffic crash in inner Brisbane on Monday night.
Ms MacMahon, 37, sustained a serious head injury in the two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Main and Baines streets, Kangaroo Point, about 6.30pm.
Police said it was believed a Hyundai i30 was turning left from Baines St at a set of lights when it collided with Ms MacMahon’s Toyota Prius, travelling south on Main St.
The collision sent the Prius on to the wrong side of the road, while the i30 skidded 50m up Main St.
Ms MacMahon remains in Princess Alexandra hospital in a serious condition.
The occupants of the i30 were also treated by paramedics and transported to Princess Alexandra in stable conditions.
Traffic was being diverted away from Bains St, Main St and Llewellyn St.
Motorists were urged to avoid the area or expect delays.
Greens federal MP Max Chandler-Mather confirmed that Ms McMahon had been in a serious car accident.
“Amy is conscious and her injuries are non life threatening,” Mr Chandler-Mather said.
“She is recovering in hospital. Thank you to first responders and amazing health care workers that have been looking after her.”
Premier Steven Miles said emergency services had taken “great care” of Dr MacMahon.
“On behalf of the government I want Amy and her family to know we are all thinking of her,” he said.
“I know our police and ambos took great care of her and that the PA hospital is the best place in the world for her to be.”
Patrons and staff at the Pineapple Hotel, on the corner of Main and Baines streets, were enjoying a Monday afternoon pint when the car Amy MacMahon was driving was involved in the serious crash.
The hotel’s general manager Shannan Ridley said he heard the loud bang from inside the restaurant along with other staff and diners.
“We heard it from inside the pub and just went running onto the street; it was a pretty big smash up,” Mr Ridley said.
“Myself and a security officer rendered assistance to the female driver who was in a bad way before all the emergency services and paramedics arrived on the scene.
“We pulled her out of the car and just were trying where we could before they got there.
“It is not the nicest thing to see happen, that’s for sure. It was a really loud bang and we just tried to help where we could.”
“We just hope that she’s OK and is not too hurt, the ambos got here pretty quick and I was glad that they took over and looked after her.”
A man from the scene said he heard the collision from two streets away.
“It’s a massive crash, I didn’t see what happened but judging by the sand that they’ve placed on the road and how bad the sound was, I’m just glad that no one died,” said that man who wished to remain anonymous.
“I was two streets away near the park and heard the screeching then the bang and saw people running towards it from the pub.”
The police Forensic Crash Unit was investigating.
Ms MacMahon was elected to seat of South Brisbane at the 2020 state election, unseating then deputy premier Jackie Trad.
The now 37-year-old was the first female Greens MP to ever be elected to Queensland Parliament.
Ms MacMahon has been a vocal opponent of the demolition and rebuild of the Gabba for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, particularly due to the relocation of East Brisbane State School.
In November 2023 she became the first MP in nearly a decade to be suspended from parliament for a day for “wilfully disobeying” an order and misconduct in the house.
“I’m not going to apologise for trying to make multinational gas corporations and the big banks fund cost-of-living relief for Queenslanders. I was elected to get in here and fight tooth and nail for everyday Queenslanders, and that’s exactly what I’ve done,” she said at the time.
