Waite’s family said doctors at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital started bringing Joshua out of an induced coma late on Thursday. They conducted a number of movement tests on Friday, and Joshua opened his eyes.

In a Facebook post revealing the good news his father Andy Waite said he and Joshua’s mother “cried with joy”.

“It is very early days yet and he is still at a critical risk but that moment we will never forget.”

Mr Waite said.

Hospital staff have dubbed Joshua “the wonder kid”.

Mr Waite thanked friends and the community for their support during the “awful rollercoaster”.

He said there was a long road to be travelled to identify the extent of his son’s injuries, but “to all of his beautiful friends, and the community, enjoy this moment and punch the air cause Joshy the wonder kid is still here to continually bless our lives”.

Jake Law-Cobbo, 18, remains in custody charged with causing grievous bodily harm, after being denied bail last week. The case has been adjourned to July 5.
