A jockey has suffered chest and facial injuries in a track fall at the Gold Coast Turf Club.
Jason Taylor was riding 15-1 shot Final Ascent in the fourth race when the incident happened about 3.15 at the Bundall venue.
The incident happened before the race.
Gold Coast Turf Club racing manager Ian Brown said the horse reared as it was entering the barriers and fell back into Taylor, crushing him.
Taylor was conscious when taken to hospital.
“It was pretty horrific ... not nice,” Turf Club CEO Steve Lines said.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a person in their 40s was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with chest and facial injuries.
Critical care and High Acuity Response Unit paramedics and doctors were on the scene.
Racing fans have taken to social media to express their concern about his condition.
Races were delayed at the track before resuming.
Friends, including fellow jockey Jag Guthmann-Chester, took to Taylor’s Facebook page to wish him well.
“Hope everything’s ok for you mate, and speedy recovery,” posted Guthmann-Chester, who rode the runner-up in the race in which Taylor was injured.
Taylor has booted home hundreds of winners during his career, winning the prestigious Stradbroke Handicap in 2011 and finishing second last year.
