TERRIBLE tragedy ... Jaxon Bradey

TAMMY Bradey broke down and wept for her son yesterday, trying to work out how the streets of his home town turned deadly on Friday morning.

It could have been any Gympie mum in her position, as 15-year-old Jaxon just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when he died after being stabbed with a bayonet on Friday morning.

"It was his last day at school as he had only a couple of exams left next week," a grieving Ms Bradey said.

"He went back to school only to collect his mobile phone that had been confiscated and then walked down town.

"He was always in town and always helping out somewhere."

Ms Bradey said she didn't know anything had happened until police officers arrived at her Cedar Pocket home, east of Gympie, at 11am.

They advised that her son had been in an accident and was in a critical condition in Gympie hospital.

"He had already been there for two hours before I knew," she said.

"About 20 doctors had been brought in from Brisbane and Nambour to try to save him, but he had lost too much blood.

"He was not aware of anything when I got there."

Ms Bradey said she appreciated that doctors had done everything they could to save her tall and solidly built son, who had hoped to make a career in the aged care industry.

Jaxon was born in Gympie in 1994, one of Ms Bradey's four sons and seven daughters, and grew up in the town where he was well known and well liked.

It was the second time his mum had been faced with the loss of a child, after her son Dalton died from meningo-coccal disease aged five, in 2002.

Ms Bradey said Jaxon had just completed his first-year cadetship with the SES.

He had been looking for a job as he didn't want to return to school at James Nash State High in Gympie.

"He wouldn't hurt a fly," Ms Bradey said.

"He was just a typical 15 year old with attitude but he could always make you smile.

"It is going to be so quiet around here without him.

"It was just a random act. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Jaxon's uncle John Tough said the teenager was like a "cup of butter" he was so soft.

"He wouldn't hurt anyone," Mr Tough said.

A 16-year-old youth appeared in Gympie Magistrates Court yesterday morning and was remanded in custody to appear on February 11.
