LISA Curry’s daughter drank up to 16 Strongbow stubbies before getting behind the wheel and swerving all over the road on the Sunshine Coast, a court has heard.

Jaimi Lee Kenny, 27, was nearly five times the legal blood-alcohol limit, with a reading of 0.23 per cent, when she was intercepted by police late last month.

The private nanny was seen swerving within the marked lanes of the Sunshine Motorway at Mountain Creek and crossing the outer lines before quickly swerving back.

Police smelled booze on her breath and when questioned she admitted she had been drinking all day and had a problem with alcohol.

“The defendant was questioned, she stated she consumed her first drink about 8.30am that morning when she woke up and her last drink was about 10pm,” Prosecutor Sergeant Leonie Scott told Maroochydore Magistrates Court today.

“The defendant further stated she wasn’t sure but she drank up to 16 stubbies of Strongbow cider.

“The defendant admitted to police that she had an alcohol problem and that she sought help in relation to this.”

Ms Kenny is the eldest child of former Olympian Lisa Curry and former Ironman Grant Kenny who split in 2009.

Magistrate Barry Barrett today described Ms Kenny’s alcohol reading as “dangerously high” and said the charge against her was serious.

Lawyer Chelsea Emery said her client had been at her best friend’s wedding that Saturday which was why she had been drinking “so early in the day”.

She said Ms Kenny, who battled “psychological issues”, had been feeling “unstable” and contacted her psychiatrist that day.

Ms Emery said alcohol had become “a bit of a feature” in Ms Kenny’s life about two years ago after a relationship breakdown.

“Unfortunately (she) started consuming alcohol to self medicate and that’s obviously quickly become a problem,” she said.

“But it is a problem that she recognises and she has some insight in relation to as she was obviously extremely co-operative with police and very open and honest about that.”

The court heard Ms Kenny had been getting help since she was 20 years old for other “troubles” plaguing her, including anxiety which she had struggled with since she was about 14 years old.

She was seeing a psychiatrist and had started taking the anti-alcohol drug Antabuse which makes users feel sick when combined with drink.

Ms Emery said her client was extremely remorseful and understood she had to be punished.

She knew she would be losing her license and also her job which required her to drive children.

“She is an intelligent young lady. She realises this could have gone horribly wrong for her and other road users. It didn’t and she is anxious about today’s court appearance but she recognises that punishment must flow,” said Ms Emery.

Judge Barrett ordered a fine of $1200 and disqualified Ms Kenny from holding or obtaining a license for 11 months, with a conviction recorded.
