Is this the most bizarre home for sale in Queensland?

THE owner describes it as an Esky on legs. And when you see what he’s achieved with shipping containers, you realise how unique this Queensland house really is.

Kirt Anthony’s Bundaberg South home is listed for sale.

OWNER Kirt Anthony describes his listed Bundaberg South home as an “Esky on legs”.

The 27-year-old has lived in the two-storey part-shipping container build since 2014 when he purchased the land with plans to construct a backpackers’ hostel.

“Everyone around the neighbourhood has an opinion on it,” he says.

“They find it not boring.”

Appearances can be deceiving and while it’s not exactly five-star accommodation, inside are two-bedrooms, two-bathrooms, a kitchen and airconditioning.

“I was just trying to organise a roof over my head and I saw a module like this, a shipping container,” Mr Anthony says.

“It’s a lovely unit.”

It took six months to build the Council-approved dwelling which has an inflatable boat parked against nearby chairs or the back fence.

“That’s in case it floods,” Mr Anthony says.

“In case everything goes under.

“It’s not the nicest thing to go through, flooding.”

Michaels Real Estate - Bundaberg marketing agent John Solito says it’s no secret the 1012sq m block of land is located in a flood zone.

“It’s in a flooded area, everyone knows that, but it’s close to town and it’s a big block, fully-fenced,” he says.

Mr Solito was taken aback when he first inspected Mr Anthony’s property.

“I was expecting a vacant block of land,” Mr Solito says.

“It doesn’t look like a house but I was surprised there was a kitchen, toilet and it’s air-conditioned upstairs as well.”

“It’s not the selling point; the selling point is the land and the location.”

Mr Anthony agrees and plans to use cash from the sale to set himself up in a more solid dwelling.

“I’m under a bit of financial strain so I’ve got to use my assets to make it through,” he says.

“I’ve got family and friends that help out.

“I’d miss the place if it sold but I just didn’t have the funds to build it.”

The property has six sewage connections, nine separate power connections and a concrete slab.

Shopping centres, schools and Bundaberg’s CBD are all just a short walk away.
