Kin & Co could be serving Brisbane's best savoury mince on toast

This cafe in Brisbane’s inner-north takes breakfast classics seriously and may just be serving the best savoury mince you’ll find in the River City. But it’s not the only dish on the menu that’s a cut above.

Delicious 100 restaurants in Queensland

AS A restaurant reviewer you’re trained to go for the most exotic thing on the menu.

That means no steak and chips, unless we’re at a steakhouse, it’s got to be wallaby tartare with pickled quandong or, perhaps, sea urchin with a scrambled egg custard.

The focus is on testing the chef’s skill, imagination and ability to turn an intriguing idea into something truly delicious.

But at favourite neighbourhood cafe Kin & Co in Teneriffe, in Brisbane’s inner north, it’s all about the tried and tested classics.

Think the likes of banana bread with whipped vanilla butter and local honeycomb, granola with raspberry sorbet, eggs Benedict and porridge at breakfast, or fresh pasta, a reuben sandwich and meatballs at lunch.

Though not as exotic as, say, cured fish hearts with aioli, classics are classics for a reason and this smart-casual eatery proves it through its precision, focus on quality ingredients and expert execution.

Take savoury mince on toast ($16) for instance.

It’s every bit the comforting and nurturing dish it’s designed to be with slow-cooked shredded brisket intertwined with little nubs of beef mince in a rich and bitey tomato sauce balanced by creamy yolk that spills from a perfectly poached egg.

Spread on either the toasted dark rye or light sourdough on the plate with a dab of chevre, it’s soul food in its simplest most pleasurable form.

Or how about the traditional omelette ($18) using ham from nearby New Farm butcher Rayners Gourmet Meats.

The half moon of silky on the inside, tanned on the outside eggs is dotted with Persian feta for a salty hit, fine strips of the ham and delicate rings of spring onion to create a dish even the most critical Frenchman would applaud.

Coffee is from Louie Louie Roasters, locally roasted by Ben Regan, and goes down as easily as a beer at the footy.

Though you’ll have to ask them to hold the chocolate flakes if you don’t want your cappuccino resembling a mocha.

There are also specialty lattes, tea, old-school milkshakes, simple smoothies, Probiotic Kitchen kombucha and HRVST St juices.

Or better yet, after 10am make your brunch boozy with a local beer or cider, glass of wine from the tight but style-diverse list or a favourite morning cocktail, such as one of three mimosas, a bellini or Bloody Mary.

They’re great for a fun catch-up with friends at one of the large, timber tables in the split-level, light-filled, industrial meets European bistro-style space underneath the second Woolstore building. While couples might prefer a seat on the sun-drenched footpath.

Either way, diners are sure to be well taken care of by the spritely and personable young team, bounding with energy and enthusiasm, yet professionalism.

Kin & Co is set to celebrate its fourth birthday soon and it’s proving like a fine wine, only getting better with age.
