Ipswich’s popular handmade markets have been cancelled due to gusty winds.

The Handmade Expo monthly markets were set to go ahead on Saturday from 9am until 1pm in Tulmur Place at the Nicholas St Precinct but were called off on Saturday morning.

The expo’s owner Michelle Murphy took to social media to announce the cancellation.

“Really unfortunate news, we’ve had to cancel the markets today,” Ms Murphy said.

“The winds are expected to be 30-45km/hr.”

She said the wind’s intensity would void the market’s insurance, if it were to go ahead as planned.

“Unfortunately as per our insurance, at 35km/hr, we need to have had the market cancelled and everybody out,” she said.

“Purely because we have so many gazebos and everything and safety is (of most importance).”

The decision was met by a mixed response, with some commenters unhappy with the decision and others in support of it.

“As a stallholder, you have totally made the right decision,” one commenter said.

“It may be inconvenient to the public but wind is a stall holder’s worst enemy, especially when it’s gusty.

“Anyone disagreeing or disputing (the decision) does not understand what it’s like to be holding your gazebo and watching your stock fly away.”

Ms Murphy confirmed the market would be back next month on Saturday, August 14.

“We’re extremely sorry, we will be back next month and are looking forward to a really good day,” she said.

“Fingers crossed for no wind.”
