JUST how much signage does one road need? That is what Laidley resident Ross Breckenridge is wondering, with 12 speed signs along eight kilometres of the Laidley-Plainland Road.

The speed ranges from 40kmh near schools to 100kmh, with three 60kmh signs within 500 metres of each other coming into Laidley.

Mr Breckenridge, a paramedic with the Queensland Ambulance Service, said four people had died on the stretch of road with a 100kmh limit.

“Reduce the speed limit to 80 and it’d be fine,” he said. “All the local residents want it lowered.”

Mr Breckenridge said the stretch of road signed at 100kmh was less than three kilometres long.

With speed limits altered on roads in nearby areas, he said similar changes were needed outside Laidley.

A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said speed limit reviews were regularly conducted.

“Speed limit reviews are conducted by the relevant road authorities and submitted to local speed management committees before speed limits can be changed,” the spokesperson said.

“These limits are set through a rigorous process that looks at several issues, including the state of the road, how it is used, who uses it, roadside activities, pedestrian and cyclists, parking, how many intersections there are and the history of crashes on the road.”

The issue has been raised in State Parliament by Member for Lockyer Ian Rickuss, who believes the numerous signs are confusing drivers.
