A court heard a young woman and two men were involved in a violent robbery at Ipswich which was sparked by a drug debt feud.

Crown prosecutor Stewart said Taleatha Maree Nowlan and two men arrived at the 38-year-old victim’s Riverview home on November 13, 2021, and demanded $500.

The court heard after the man refused the men attacked him with a bat and pushed him to the ground out the front of his home.

Prosecutor Stewart said the man’s keys, wallet, and car were then stolen.

Prosecutor Stewart said later on Nowlan, 20, sent him a video from her Facebook messenger bragging about having the car and refusing to return it until she was paid.

Barrister Cecelia Bernardin said her client, who had been using methamphetamines since she was 16, was high at the time of the violent robbery and noted the behaviour was out of character.

Bernardin said Nowlan completed a number of programs while in jail for 10 months, and highlighted she wasn’t the one who physically carried out the assault which resulted in minor injuries.

Judge Dennis Lynch QC said while Nowlan was not the principle offender, she was centrally involved in the crime occurring.

Judge Lynch QC told Nowlan dealing with her drug addiction would not be easy but she did have a chance at rehabilitation and a happy life.

On Thursday, April 21, Nowlan pleaded guilty to violent robbery while armed in company, the unlawful use of a vehicle, and was sentenced to two years’ probation.

A conviction was recorded for the robbery, although no conviction was recorded for the unlawful use.
