Swerving driver was five times the alcohol limit

AN IPSWICH man caught driving while more than five times the legal limit has been given immediate parole.

AN IPSWICH man caught driving while more than five times the legal limit has been given immediate parole.

Shaun Anthony Scully, 34, pleaded guilty at the Ipswich Magistrates Court this week to driving under the influence of liquor and obstructing police.

The court heard at 11.45pm on Saturday, December 14, police noticed a car swerving on the road and driving without its headlights turned on.

Police intercepted the vehicle on Mary St in Blackstone.

The court heard the driver, Scully, stepped out of the car when he was pulled over and was heavily intoxicated.

Police reported he staggered and began throwing items onto the ground with force.

He was breath tested by police and registered a blood alcohol reading of 0.263, more than five times the legal limit.

He was taken into custody by police.

The court heard when Scully was being walked into Ipswich station by a police officer, he attempted to free himself from custody and tried to head-butt the glass sliding doors of the station.

According to police, Scully had to be restrained with handcuffs to stop him from continuing to obstruct the police officer taking him in.

Scully told the court he had been struggling with emotional trauma at the time and had been self-medicating with alcohol.

He said he realised he had a problem and hadn't had a drink in 2014.

The court heard Scully had two prior convictions for high-level drink driving.

Scully was sentenced to a total of three months prison and granted immediate release on parole. He was disqualified from driving or holding a driver's licence for the next two years.
