WITH summer starting, the Bureau of Meteorology is calling for people to become volunteer storm spotters in the Lockyer Valley.

The bureau and Lockyer Valley Regional Council are putting the call out for volunteers in order to issue more timely and accurate warnings.

Spotters can report to the bureau by telephone or online, and are asked to report when they see or hear of damage caused by hailstones larger than 2cm in diameter, winds of more than 90kmh, heavy rain and flash flooding and the rare occurrence of tornadoes, funnel clouds and water spouts.

Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones said the volunteers would help the bureau gain a better understanding of the frequency and distribution of violent storms across the area.

"The system will enable the bureau and council to receive instant information from residents who are experiencing severe weather - the information would then be fed back to the wider community via local radio, council and websites," he said.

For further information or to volunteer to become a storm spotter, contact the council's disaster manager, Dave Mazzaferri, at dmazzaferri@lvrc.qld.gov.au.
