RUGBY league fans are in for a smorgasbord of action this weekend starting with the televised Women's State of Origin on Friday night.

This will be followed on Saturday with two internationals - PNG playing Fiji and Tonga tackling Samoa.

On early Sunday morning, we will see the Test played in Denver between New Zealand and England before we all sit down to State of Origin 2.

The curtainraiser to the Origin features the Queensland Residents taking on the NSW Residents.

If this is not enough action for you, go to one of the three Rugby League Ipswich games with West End battling the Cobras, Brothers at home to Swifts, and Norths taking on the Goodna Eagles.

World Cup upsets

EVERY country has played their first game in the Soccer World Cup with some predicted results and some big upsets.

While the home nation Russia has got off to a brilliant start, the same could not be said for for some of the favourites in Argentina and Brazil who were both kept to draws against Iceland and Switzerland respectively.

Germany. also another powerful nation, slipped at the first hurdle suffering a defeat at the hands of Mexico.

Australia played great in game one against France but unfortunately came away with a 2-1 lose meaning the game overnight against Denmark was a must win.

Greatest golfer

THE golfing family in Australia and around the world was saddened with the recent passing of Peter Thomson.

He was arguably the greatest golfer we have produced.

Thomson had a huge influence on the way golf is played in our country. He was President of the PGA of Australia for a phenomenal 32 years and won an incredible five British Opens between 1954-65.

The 1965 win was his greatest achievement as he had to beat champions like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player.

Thomson was also a very smart golfer, an attribute he used to design over 200 golf courses worldwide.

He was a total gentleman and always had encouraging words for any upcoming young golfers.

RIP Peter.

Quick thoughts

HERO of the week: What a fantastic effort by Ipswich's Ash Barty to win the Nottingham Open. Ash is a strong chance to win Wimbledon.

Villain of the week 1: The monumental meltdown from golfing legend Phil Mickelsen to hit a moving ball before it rolled of the putting surface. He should have been disqualified.

Villain of the week 2: Australian Cricket has been in the wars lately with the ball tampering episode but the current team sunk to an all-time low by getting thrashed by 242 runs.

Did you know? For the first 44 years of Wimbledon, the defending champion was given an automatic position in the following year's final. Today you must win seven games.

Bomber's Best:My Ipswich Cup tip Emphasis was a chance on the corner before fading badly.

This week Mexico will continue their great form by defeating South Korea.
