Rosewood on rise in Reserve Grade

THE Rosewood Roosters are back in the Reserve Grade Rugby League Ipswich competition after several years in the wilderness.

After the first three rounds, the Roosters are sitting on the bottom of the ladder with three straight losses.

In game four against Swifts, the Roosters turned up to play, securing their first win 38-22.

The winning feeling continued last week with their best performance of the season in a decisive 34-12 victory over the Eastern Cobras.

This win coincided with the arrival of ex-Jets star Brendan Marshall, who called the shots from five-eight and had a great game.

He was not the only star on the night with the competition's leading try scorer and pointscorer Joshua Ryan also continuing his fine early season form.

Rosewood's two victories have moved the country club into fifth position.

The Roosters will be out for a trifecta of victories when they travel to Fassifern this weekend.

Fantastic feats

THE Commonwealth Games will go down as our most successful with Australia winning 198 medals (80 gold, 59 silver and 59 bronze).

That is an increase of 61 medals from the 2014 Glasgow games.

While we saw some usual stars win gold, we also witnessed the future of most sports with the new breed ready to make their mark in their respective sports.

After some fantastic performances, they have made themselves known to the Australian public.

A great part of these Games was the inclusion of the Para athletes. It was the first time they have had the privilege of plying their trade inside the Games atmosphere.

It's now time for the Olympic Games to follow suit and include them as well.

Terrific couple

CONGRATULATIONS to Ipswich Indoor Sports Centre owners Kevin and Leah Ala- Outinen, who celebrated 30 years of marriage on Tuesday.

The Ooty's are two of the nicest and friendliest sporting administrators around.

The wonderful occasion for the couple was even more special for Kevin as it also doubled as his birthday.

RIP Darrell

ICONIC sports broadcaster Darrell Eastlake lost his battle at the age of 75.

Darrell provided some much loved commentary, being remembered for his fantastic State of Origin calls and his weightlifting commentary where his huge voice was heard.

Quick thoughts

HERO of the week 1: Kingston Town, Phar Lap, Maykbe Diva, Black Cavair are all champions that have graced our turf. You can add Winx to this illustrious group with an awe-inspiring win last weekend making it 25 in a row.

Villain of the week: To whoever organised and sanctioned the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony. These Games are about the athletes so why didn't we get to see them. Apologies are starting to get a little stale.

Bomber's best: I tipped Lisa Weightman to win a medal in the women's marathon and she saluted with a silver medal.

This week I see the New Zealand Warriors bursting the St George Dragons bubble.
