The scene is set for an entertaining grand final showdown between Valley and Wests as the Lord’s Taverners competition reaches its finale on Sunday.

Wests downed the Gold Coast, while Valley won by the skin of their teeth against the Sunshine Coast in two semi-final clashes over the weekend.

Valley batsmen Tom Collier earned a long awaited First Grade call up and spent it in the field.

On Saturday the 19-year-old will find himself in the middle when he and his teammates look to chase down UQ’s total at home at Ashgrove.

So who stood out over the weekend’s club cricket action?

PREMIER CRICKET WRAP

Big runs from two in-form batters came in contrasting styles as the Queensland Premier Cricket competition approached its halfway stage.

The start of the 10th round of the First Grade two-day competition featured another mighty knock from University of Queensland opening batsman Angus Lovell, while hard-hitting Norths top order batsmen Josh Brown peeled off an exhilarating ton.

Lovell has been a standout in his second season since switching from the Sunshine Coast, and his latest knock of 191 from 291 balls was an ideal follow-on from his breakthrough 204 not out last month as part of a record partnership with Queensland opener Bryce Street.

Lovell’s patient 191 formed the bulk of their total of 7-330 against Valley and stamped him as an obvious choice in the Premier Cricket team of the week.

Brown, who is set for his first taste of the BBL this summer as a local replacement player with the Brisbane Heat, peeled off a dashing 131 from 79 balls for Norths against South Brisbane.

He saved his legs, smacking 12 sixes and 11 fours, to score 116 runs in boundaries.

Souths leggie James Rosewarne collected 5/94 from 16 overs including Brown’s wicket.

The next generation of Queensland’s male and female representatives also enjoyed success.

Valley wicketkeeper Kira Holmes, originally from Allora and a Queensland under-19 rep last season, scored an impressive 139 from 128 balls for her side, while another Darling Downs product, Toowoomba’s Harrison Tzannes had a similar result in third grade for Norths.

Tzannes, who will play in the Queensland Country under-19 side at the nationals next month, hit 122 for the Vikings.

Wynnum-Manly all-rounder Holly Barr peeled off a mighty century in the under-19 competition ahead of the National Under-19 women’s championships next month.

Barr’s knock of 110 came off just 58 balls.

The Lord’s Taverners Final will be staged on Sunday between Valley and Western Suburbs at Ian Healy Oval after Valley overcame Sunshine Coast and Wests beat Gold Coast with spinner Jack Matthews snaring 5-26 from his 10 overs.

LORD’S TAVERNERS SUPER XI

JACK MATHEWS (WESTERN SUBURBS)

It was a Mathews masterclass at Graceville Memorial Park on Sunday which booked Wests’ their ticket to the grand final.

The youngster was on fire, taking a five-wicket haul when it mattered most. His figures were 5/26 off 10 with four brilliant maidens.

It’s worth noting he took five in a row as well, erasing the entire Gold Coast middle order.

JACK SONTER (WESTERN SUBURBS)

Sonter’s form continues to show week in week out and it was no different in the biggest game of the season.

The Queensland Under 17 select kept the scoreboard ticking and drained the life out of his rivals with a 44 run knock to steer them home to a comfortable six wicket victory.

OAM PATEL (GOLD COAST)

Patel put in his best performance when dismissing both Wests openers, applying the pressure with four maiden overs and just two wides.

He removed danger man Daniel Skipwith but with a total of just 108 runs to defend Patel couldn’t have done much more.

SAM LEWIS (VALLEY)

Indeed Year 10 Lewis saved his best for last – he came in clutch with a spell of dreams with 4/17 off 10 overs.

Lewis hadn’t found his stride but it all fell into place when it came crunch time, the young gun removing the Sunshine Coast’s tail to go along with a run out.

THOMAS DAVIES (VALLEY)

Davies dismissed the dangerous Chace Oates for nine and then Liam Johnson for a golden duck.

Had he not, the Sunshine Coast’s total of 157 would have ballooned to upwards of 200.

He was sharp and straight to the point in his four overs, collecting 2/22.

JAMIE DIGGLES/RILEY JOBSON (SUNSHINE COAST)

Diggles and Jobson dug in with 31 and 37 respectively – Diggles especially, striking it at a run-a-ball facing fired up Valley opening bowlers.

HARRY FROST/WILLIAM NICKELSON/SAXON JEH (VALLEY)

This trio fired just enough to get scrape Valley home by the skin of their teeth.

Frost stood up with 39 when opening, Nickelson managed 37, while Jeh scored a brilliant 21 off 25 at No.7.

CHARLIE MOORE (SUNSHINE COAST)

Moore was magnificent, taking three wickets and keeping it very tight, he was a standout with the ball, but the Valley boys just wanted it that bit more.

The Yoku road youngsters won by just one wicket in the end, but high praise to both teams for the semi-final classic they put on show.
