Bulls gore Bushrangers

QUEENSLAND has become just the third team in Pura Cup/Sheffield Shield history to breakthrough the 900 run barrier on the fourth day of the domestic final against Victoria at The Gabba. Bulls skipper Jimmy Maher finally pulled the plug on his side's innings at 6-900 midway through the final session. Needing only a draw to claim the title, Maher made good on yesterday's promise to "bat and bat and bat" as the hosts established a phenomenal 556 run lead after Victoria was bowled out for 344 on day two. Queensland's total was the third highest score in the Australian domestic competition and fell just short of second-placed NSW's 918 set way back in 1901. Victoria holds the record of 1,107 set against the Blues in 1926-27. All-rounder Shane Watson joined Maher as a double century maker yesterday before he was forced to retire hurt with severe cramps on 201. Clinton Perren added a spectacular 173 to join Martin Love in reaching triple figures also. Watson and Perren produced a record 329-run fourth-wicket stand and frustrated the Bushrangers' bowling attack that toiled in the field for more than 16 hours. It was a sweet moment for Watson, whose all-round talents were recently slammed by fast bowling great Jeff Thomson. Victoria bowled 242 overs and Mick Lewis (1-156), Dirk Nannes (3-150), Shane Harwood (0-152), Jon Moss (0-108) and Cameron White (0-139) were hit for more than 100 runs each. Watson and Ashley Noffke (stomach virus) are unlikely to bowl today
