BALES of hay are slowly taking over the streets of Kalbar.

With Kalbar Country Day and Hay Festival fast approaching, the annual hay bale sculptures are popping up around town.

Hay sculptor Shirley Ernst has made three sculptures for this year's country day.

Her works are just some of the pieces that have appeared.

"There are about 14 all together at the moment," she said.

"We're hoping for a few more, but this is about the same number as last year."

Ms Ernst said the sculptures already had brought more tourists into town.

"Hopefully the sculptures and the country day bring a few more in as well," she said.

The Kalbar Country Day also includes a fashion parade, farm machinery display, Oktoberfest celebrations and pumpkin and hay-rolling competitions.

Kalbar Country Day and Hay Festival will be on Saturday, October 15.
