A DISTANCE of road that could stretch from Brisbane to Cairns will be upgraded by the Scenic Rim Regional Council this financial year.

The council said they would this year be upgrading in excess of 1700km of road infrastructure.

According to council figures he 2012/13 Works Program will "repair, restore or replace more than half a million square metres of sealed road".

Fourteen bridges will see major works conducted including replacement or major rehabilitation including the replacement of Stokes Bridge at Silverdale.

The works will include resheeting of 20% of the region's unsealed roads and resealing 5% of the existing sealed roads across the Scenic Rim region.

The council recently signed off on more than $7 million of flood restoration works.

Scenic Rim mayor John Brent said the scale of work being undertaken this financial year was unprecedented.

"The level of road reconstruction that will occur in the Scenic Rim during 2012/13 is unparalleled and I don't think we will see this scale of activity again," he said.

"Council is rolling out the construction phase of our flood restoration process at rapid pace after an exhaustive documentation and planning process."

Areas scheduled for major roadworks across the Scenic Rim include - the Aratula State School bus set down area; Barney View Rd; final reconstruction of Church St, Boonah; Bell Rd, Mt Alford; road and intersection reconstruction at Dugandan; Old Rosevale Rd; Tarome Rd; as well as region-wide upgrades to road furniture, signs, guard rails, footpaths, and resheeting of more than 120km of gravel roads and shoulders.

For further information and a full list of road infrastructure to be upgraded or worked on is available at the Scenic Rim council website scenicrim.qld.gov.au.
