An Ipswich woman used a stolen credit card to buy booze and cigarettes during a period of offending committed while a probation order was still in place.
The charges of receiving a tainted property and fraud were among 23 offences that Renee Brackin pleaded guilty to when she appeared for sentence at Ipswich Magistrates Court.
Renee Sheree Brackin, 38, from One Mile, pleaded guilty to offences including stealing, receiving tainted goods; driving when drug positive; five charges of fraud; two charges of obstructing police; causing wilful damage to police property; breach of a probation order; and two counts of failing to appear at court.
An Ipswich magistrate scolded her “slack approach” to probation orders.
Prosecutor Sergeant Nicholas Turnbull said Brackin was on a probation order at the time of the offending.
No police facts of the charges were read onto the public record. Some details were revealed by Brackin’s lawyer and also the magistrate during proceedings.
Defence lawyer Bradley Munt said Brackin, a mother of four, instructed that she was living with a friend and given the debit card to go shopping.
“She benefited in that she used the card to purchase groceries, alcohol and tobacco,” Mr Munt said.
“She did not make the necessary inquiries (regarding card ownership) so that she may not have used the card.”
He said Brackin also had “periodic drug use” and this related to charges where police refer to finding crystal residue in plastic bags, “that she had been left with after use with friends”.
“This left her open when police made inquiries,” he said.
Brackin grew up in the Beaudesert area and worked at times as a labourer, Mr Munt said.
Magistrate Leanne Scoines said there were 23 charges with offences spanning between March 2020 and May this year.
She said the bankcard had been left at Ipswich Hospital and then used by Brackin to buy cigarettes costing $80.
“You made multiple visits to Coles Ipswich and you purchased some alcohol,” she said.
Ms Scoines said police found her in an agitated state in May and then in July last year she stole confectionery from a 7-Eleven store.
Ms Scoines said she also involved young people in her stealing offences.
In October police found her on a street with hypodermic needles and a clear liquid and a crystal substance like amphetamine.
She said officers tried to handcuff her and it escalated with Brackin trying to grab the handcuffs.
“You bent a door out of shape when you kicked at the police vehicle,” she said.
“You were again in possession of a crystal substance. A raft of charges arise out of that contact.”
Ms Scoines said a report revealed her attendance on a probation order had been poor and that she was abrasive with Corrections staff.
“You have had a pretty slack approach to your commitments and court,” Ms Scoines said.
Brackin was sentenced to a total of nine months’ jail with immediate parole.
For drug driving she was fined $350 and disqualified for three months.
